The members of Queen weren't always the kindest when talking about "Ice Ice Baby," which was ultimately co-credited to the band as well as their "Under Pressure" collaborator David Bowie. And even now, most people ~still~ wouldn't be aware of those sonic similarities because they've only ever heard the Knight Rider theme and not those other two pieces of music that were sampled. There was no YouTube or Whosampled where we could find that stuff. So why aren't the makers of the Knight Rider theme being trashed up and down by angry Anti-Sampling crusaders for being "lazy" or "intellectual property thieves?"Īt the time, nobody was even aware of those two pieces of music. "Sphinx" actually came out BEFORE the show aired on TV, and there's interviews with Glen, Don & Stu where they ADMIT to taking that Bass Line and repurposing it.

Seeing as how the first piece was from 1923, Paul Whiteman was probably already dead by the time Knight Rider was on TV, but Harry Thuuman made "Sphinx" in about the same time frame as the show taking off, so he very easily could have sued the crap out of the makers of the Knight Rider theme and gotten himself (well, more likely his record lable) a ton of money. Without "Parade of The Wooden Soldiers" and without "Sphinx" - you don't have the "Knight Rider Main Theme."Īctually, if Glen, Don & Stu hadn't "re-interpolated" those two pieces of music, the Knight Rider theme would have been something else entirely, and it might not have even been as good as what we got. Why is it that when both Busta Rhymes and Timbaland & Magoo each did a Knight Rider song, they had to clear the sample with Glen Larson, Don Peak and Stu Phillips and pay Vivendi Universal a bunch of money for using the Knight Rider song from their TV show.īut when Glen, Don & Stu were making that theme for Knight Rider, they didn't have to credit Paul Whiteman or Harry Thuuman, who - without their contributions - the song wouldn't even exist? that is actually stolen from a song called "Sphinx" by a German techno musician by the name of Harry Thuuman. "Bwuddup-Bwuddup-Bwuddup - Bwuddup, Bwuddup.". Well actually (and I only found this out about a year ago) - the main Melody, that "Bwant-nah-nah-nah, Bwant-Nah-nah-nah, Bwant nanna nah nah nahhhh" is stolen from the first 10 seconds of "Parade of The Wooden Soldiers" by Paul Whiteman and His Orchestra. "Written and produced by Glen Larson, Don Peak and Stu Phillips".

If "Sampling is theft" then Glen Larson, Don Peak and Stu Philips are just as much "thieves" as any Hip Hop beat maker.Īll my life I thought that the Knight Rider theme was a wholly original composition.
